Chapter 12: Tele-Amp Symec
---
Ada placed a call to my relic just before midnight. She must have guessed (or known somehow) that I was still awake. âLetâs handle this now,â she said. âI planned to ask you to meet me downtown tomorrow, but now I donât expect the place I had in mind will be open.â
âWhy not?â
âThereâs news of another Heart-in-the-Steam killing,â Ada sighed. âThis time right inside one of the service kitchens on the StraÃweg block. I expect that whole neighborhood to be under FOV lockdown quite soon.â
âThe Lionâs not too far from the outskirts of New Ulm,â I offered. âIf we canât handle this over the phone, could you meet me at one of the Exclusion Border diners? The one closest to me is called Turn Back Nineteen.â
âIâll meet you at Turn Back Nineteen in about a half hour,â she answered before hanging up.
I arrived early and drank chamomile until I heard the bell at the entrance ring to announce Adaâs appearance. She paced over and sat across from me. Instead of a greeting, she immediately declared: âIâd like to put you in touch with a skilled Tele-Amp.â
âYou found me an Attuned person?â
âHe might be able to shed some light on this whole situation,â Ada nodded. âAnd heâs looking for work, so you can put him on any investigative tasks you please.â She accepted a glass of water from the waiter and drank from it before waving the server away. She wouldnât be here long enough for a drink order.
Ada continued: âIâll warn you that this Tele-Amp is a bit of a strange person. He often waxes philosophical, so be careful that he doesnât distract you.â
âCan you walk me through how Tele-Amplification works?â I asked. I was generally familiar with the idea of Attuned powers, but Iâd never personally met such a person before. âThese people are like clairvoyants, right? They can hear thoughts and read minds?â
Ada smiled impatiently. She plainly had better things to do than to explain the phenomenon of Mind Transistance to me.
âThey cannot read minds,â she clarified. âThey can only transmit ideas between two external parties. Naturally, there is a large element of implicit trust. The Tele-Amp never knows what they are sharing between the two targets. Theyâre not privy to it. Likewise, you as the receiver of thoughts can never be entirely sure that the Attuned person is acting in good faith.â
âActing in good faith?â
âIf I were an Attuned, and I told you I was sending you thoughts from a specific person, youâd have to take my word for it that I wasnât actually targeting someone else instead.â
She drew from her water again before continuing. âTrust is therefore of the utmost importance, as Iâve said. I trust this Tele-Amp because he has proven himself to do reliable work. His name is Symec, by the way.â
Ada retrieved a device much like my relic from her pocketbook in order to find his contact information. I was impressed. It required a lot of money, knowledge, and luck for me to maintain a portable digital system here in New Ulm.
